Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an address for a vacant lot?

No. St. Joseph County does not issue addresses for vacant land unless a utility meter or permanent structure is being installed.

Why does my Nottawa home have a Sturgis physical address?

The Nottawa Post Office does not provide residential delivery. To receive mail at your home mailbox, the USPS requires a Sturgis ZIP code. However, your E-911 physical location remains verified within our system.

How long does the process take?

Once your local unit forwards the request to the County, we typically process it within 1 business day, though we recommend allowing 2-3 days for the total cycle.

Can I choose my own address number?

No. Numbers are assigned mathematically based on driveway location to ensure they are logical for emergency responders.
