The Board of Commissioners is the legislative body of St. Joseph County, discharging its duties as required by federal and state law. Seven commissioners are elected to serve four-year terms.

- Equalize tax assessments
- Adopt ordinances
- Manage county property
- Audit county funds
- Appoint boards
- Enter contracts
