Death records are open to the public. Death certificates are filed in the county where the death occurred.

Complete a Request for a Death Certificate Online. Note: We cannot ship expedited to a PO Box. Please use a physical address for expedited orders.
Request by Mail/In Person
You can obtain a death certificate for anyone who passed away in St. Joseph County by completing the Death Certificate Request Form (PDF) and mailing it to the St. Joseph County Clerk or by bringing it in person with the appropriate fee. When ordering by mail, a copy of the requestor's I.D. must be sent along with the payment and request form.
Please call 269.467.5602 for an appointment. The office is closed 12 – 1 p.m.
Fees
Effective January 1, 2021, vital record fees are $20 for the first copy and $10 for each additional copy.
- $20.00 for the first copy of a death certificate.
- $10.00 for each subsequent copy of the same record.
- No Personal Checks
St. Joseph County Death Record Search
The Death Record Search will include only persons who died in St. Joseph County, MI.
The search can be used to see if a death has been recorded in St. Joseph County, MI and to obtain the number of that death record. The death record itself cannot be viewed through this interface.
Full death records can be requested at the St. Joseph County Clerk's Office. If you would like to request a record at the Clerk's office, please write down the name and record number.
