2026 Household Hazardous Waste Collection

St. Joseph County is pleased to announce the schedule for the 2026 Household Hazardous Waste collection. These events provide a safe and responsible way for residents to dispose of materials that are harmful to our local environment. By keeping these items out of our landfills and water systems, we work together to keep our community healthy.

Please note that these services are for St. Joseph County households only. We cannot accept materials from businesses or industrial operations.

Mark Your Calendars

The collections will be held at the Centreville Fairgrounds on two dates this year. To ensure the safety of our staff and volunteers, please package all items securely for transport.

  • Tuesday, May 5: 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM
  • Tuesday, October 6: 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM

What Can You Bring?

We accept a wide range of hazardous materials, electronics, and tires. While many items are free to drop off, some require a fee to cover the costs of specialized recycling and disposal.

Hazardous Materials and Electronics Most hazardous items are free for the first 100 pounds. If your load exceeds 100 pounds, a fee of $2.00 per pound will apply.

  • Household Hazards: Batteries, fluorescent and LED bulbs, old gasoline, pesticides, and pool chemicals.
  • Medical Items: Diabetic test strips and pharmaceutical needles (sharps).
  • Electronics: Computers, printers, scanners, VCRs, and game systems.
  • Televisions: There is a limit of two televisions per household, or a fee of $10.00 each.

Paint, Tires, and Paper

  • Paint: There is a fee of $3.00 per can for latex paint. Oil-based paints and stains are also accepted.
  • Tires: Residents may bring up to 10 passenger or light truck tires for free. After the first 10, the cost is $2.00 each. Semi tires are $5.00 each and tractor tires are $25.00 each. All tires must be removed from the rims and be free of mud, concrete, and water.
  • Paper: We accept cardboard, junk mail, magazines, and newspapers.

Items We Cannot Accept

Please be aware that some items are not eligible for this collection. Notably, an appliance and scrap metal vendor will not be attending this year.

  • No Large Appliances: We cannot take refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers, or air conditioners.

  • No Glass, Plastic, or Styrofoam: Please dispose of these through your regular recycling service.
