Boater Safety Courses
The Marine Patrol Division provides Boater Safety Classes free of charge to the public. Contact the Sheriff’s Office for current schedules and registration.
The Marine Patrol is responsible for enforcing all watercraft laws across the 23 square miles of open waterways in St. Joseph County. Our deputies provide education, enforcement of state and local statutes, and specialized water-based safety services.
Patrol Responsibilities
Marine Patrol Deputies are tasked with investigating watercraft accidents, conducting safety inspections, and ensuring a secure environment for all recreational boaters.
Watercraft Inspection Points
- Is a functional fire extinguisher available (if required)?
- Are registration and boater’s safety certificates valid?
- Is the operator free from the influence of drugs or alcohol?
- Is the vessel legally registered with a proper display of numbers?
- Are there life jackets (PFDs) in proper sizes for every person on board?
The Marine Patrol Division remains dedicated to maintaining safety standards on our lakes and rivers through proactive enforcement and community education.
