How 911 Works

What Happens When You Call 911

Landline & Non-Cellular Calls

When calling from a standard phone, your provider routes the call through various switches to reach out center.
This may take up to 7 seconds. Do not hang up!

Once answered, our system instantly displays your vital information:

Phase 2 Wireless Tracking

St. Joseph County utilizes Phase 2 Wireless technology. When you call from a cell phone, we can plot your location on our GIS mapping software to within 300 feet or less (often as close at 10 feet).

CAD & Mapping

Your location is automatically sent to our Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. This allows us to track emergency units, identifying prior responses to your location, and keep a detailed record of contacts.

Accidental Dial? DO NOT HANG UP!

If you accidentally dial 911, stay on the line and explain the mistake. If you hang up, a law enforcement officer will be dispatched to your location to ensure your safety. This may delay help for a legitimate emergency elsewhere.

Help us Find You Fast

Correct and prominent address display is required by St. Joseph County Ordinance. Help emergency services find your home quickly by ensuring your house number is visible from the roadway.

  • Use reflective green and white address signs.
  • Tell the dispatcher if your home is hidden or down a long lane.
  • Call Central Dispatch for a list of locations where signs can be purchased.
