Poverty Exemption Information
Program Overview & Eligibility
A Poverty Exemption may reduce city, township, or village property taxes for eligible residents. This is granted through your local Board of Review and must be applied for every tax year.
- Principal Residence: The property must be your primary home.
- Financial Criteria: Typically follows Federal Poverty Limits; local units may include an asset test.
- State Requirement: You must also file for a Homestead Tax Credit with the State of Michigan.
- Board of Review: Authority to reduce tax bills for the current year is held by the Board, which meets in March.
Note: While not required, you are highly encouraged to attend the Board of Review meeting in person.

Submit applications to your assessor at least two (2) weeks before the Board of Review meets.
